Nonthaburi Thailand The BEST Place to Live Near Bangkok

Why I Love Living in Nonthaburi Thailand – A Hidden Gem Next to Bangkok

When people think of Thailand, their minds instantly go to Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai, but what if I told you that one of the best places to live in Thailand is just outside the capital? Welcome to Nonthaburi Thailand! A city that blends the best of Thai culture, local charm, and modern convenience without the overwhelming crowds of Bangkok.

I’ve been living in Nonthaburi Thailand, for quite some time now, and I have to say—it’s an absolute gem. From its vibrant markets and nightlife to peaceful riverside spots and authentic local experiences, Nonthaburi has everything I need to feel at home. Let me take you on a journey through my life here and why I absolutely love living in this underrated province.

Where Is Nonthaburi?

Nonthaburi is a province just north of Bangkok, often overlooked by tourists but well-loved by locals. Despite being its own province, Nonthaburi is seamlessly connected to the capital. Making it easy to travel between Nonthaburi and Bangkok via the MRT, BTS, or even the Chao Phraya Express boat.

The city itself is a beautiful mix of traditional Thai culture and modern city life. It offers everything you’d expect from Bangkok—markets, shopping malls, temples, and great food. Without the high cost of living or the overwhelming traffic (although let’s be honest, traffic can still be a thing here!).

The Best Things to Do in Nonthaburi Thailand

1. Local Markets – A Food Lover’s Paradise

One of the biggest reasons I love Nonthaburi is its incredible markets. The local markets here are vibrant, full of life, and packed with some of the best food you’ll ever eat. If you want a real taste of Thai culture, you can’t miss Nonthaburi Market. From fresh seafood to street food classics like pad Thai, mango sticky rice, and grilled meats, every visit feels like a food adventure.

Another must-visit is Pak Kret Market, a hidden gem where you can find everything from handmade crafts to delicious Thai desserts.

2. Hidden Gems – Riverside Cafés and Floating Noodle Boats

Nonthaburi is home to some of the most charming riverside cafés I’ve ever visited. One of my favorites is a cozy café where you can sip on amazing coffee while feeding fish in the river. There’s something incredibly peaceful about sitting by the Chao Phraya River, watching the boats go by as you enjoy a good cup of Thai iced tea.

And then, there’s the floating noodle boat experience. An unexpected treat where you get to enjoy freshly made Thai noodles served directly from a boat! It’s a true taste of Thailand’s rich food culture that you won’t find in many tourist guides.

3. Nonthaburi Thailand Nightlife – Bars, Craft Beer, and Live Music

While Bangkok might be known for its wild parties, Nonthaburi nightlife has its own charm. If you’re looking for a more relaxed, yet entertaining night out, there are plenty of places to choose from. Some of my favorite spots include restaurants with live music, craft beer, and great food. Perfect for unwinding after a long day.

There’s also a great selection of rooftop bars where you can sip cocktails while enjoying stunning views of the river. It’s a more laid-back alternative to the intense clubbing scene of Bangkok nightlife but still packed with fun!

4. Exploring Ko Kret – A Cultural Escape

One of the most unique experiences in Nonthaburi province is visiting Ko Kret, a small island in the Chao Phraya River famous for its traditional pottery and art workshops. Here, you can learn how to make your own pottery, paint beautiful Thai designs, and explore the local temples and markets.

It’s the perfect getaway if you’re looking to slow down and immerse yourself in Thai culture while supporting local artisans.

5. Shopping in Nonthaburi Thailand is fabulous!!

Nonthaburi is home to some of the biggest and most impressive malls in Thailand, even larger than many in central Bangkok! If you love shopping, dining, and entertainment, you’ll be spoiled for choice here. Central Westgate, one of the largest malls in Southeast Asia, offers endless retail options, a massive food court, and even IKEA Bang Yai, the biggest IKEA in Thailand! The Mall Ngamwongwan is another top destination, packed with fashion stores, restaurants, and a massive supermarket.

For a high-end shopping experience, Central Plaza Rattanathibet delivers a mix of luxury and local brands, alongside great dining and entertainment. These mega-malls aren’t just about shopping—they’re entertainment hubs where you can catch a movie, enjoy live performances, and explore endless activities. If you’re looking for world-class malls without the overcrowding of Bangkok, Nonthaburi is the place to be!

6. Affordable Cost of Living – More for Less!

One of the biggest reasons I love living in Nonthaburi city is the cost of living. Compared to Bangkok, everything here is much more affordable. From rent to food, you get more value for your money while still having access to modern amenities and entertainment.

For example, in Bangkok, a decent apartment in the city center could cost a fortune, but in Nonthaburi, you can find spacious and modern apartments for a fraction of the price. And the best part? You’re still close enough to enjoy everything the capital has to offer without actually living in the chaos of it.

Why Nonthaburi Feels Like Home

Living in Nonthaburi Thailand has been one of the best decisions of my life. It offers the perfect balance between city life and peaceful escapes, with beautiful hidden gems, authentic cultural experiences, amazing food, and a welcoming community.

If you’re looking for a place that’s affordable, convenient, and full of Thai charm, Nonthaburi might just be the hidden gem you’ve been searching for. Whether you’re moving here or just visiting, I highly recommend exploring all that this incredible province has to offer!
