Located on the north coast of Cornwall, in southwest England, Newquay is a renowned destination for its stunning beaches. With Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches attracting surfers from all over the world, this coastal town is a must-visit spot for anyone who loves catching the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
The journey from London is around 6 hours by train. I decided to stay in the Watergate Bay area for 2 nights. The Hotel I stayed in is the best hotel in Cornwall – Watergate Bay Hotel.
To reach the hotel and the beach I took bus 56 for around 10 minutes, stopping at “The Phoenix”.
The best things to do in Newquay
One of the first things I did after I arrived at Newquay was to eat a typical cornish pasty, in the main street. I actually tried 2, one at the “Cornish Bakery” and the other one at “Rowe’s cornish bakers”, both delicious. I had a nice coffee break at “Palm Bay”, where they have a very nice selection of premium hot drinks.
The Hotel gave me the opportunity to book a lot of activities, including a private lesson of surfing. You can book your lesson at Wavehunters at the Extreme Academy. A private lesson for beginners, lasts 2 hours.
Our teacher Aimee was extremely professional, friendly, funny and she had so much patience. I had so much fun and I enjoyed every single minute in the water.
You can walk the 3.5 miles into Newquay to Watergate Bay along the coastal path. The hike was very pleasant and the view was just stunning.
I was lucky enough to see the English National Surfing Championships which is one of the UK’s longest-running surfing competitions. It usually runs the first weekend of May. It was such a wonderful experience to see all the talented surfers.
