Looking for a peaceful and budget-friendly day trip from London? Whitstable in Kent is the perfect destination for you! Just a 1 hour and 30 minutes train ride away from London Victoria, this charming seaside town won’t disappoint. I always try to keep my day trips under £50 and the cost of the train was less than £20 from Victoria Station. I took this trip in early January. Upon arrival, my friend and I strolled around the High Street and noticed how tranquil the town was. Unfortunately, many shops and seaside stands were closed, including the famous “Wheelers Oyster Bar,” which was on my list for so long. Despite this setback, I was determined to taste some fresh oysters, and my friend couldn’t handle my constant complaints about not trying any.

During our day trip from London to Whitstable, we stumbled upon a quaint bakery called “Hubbard’s Bakery” that had the most delectable sausage rolls I’ve ever tasted. We also couldn’t resist buying some adorable sugar cookies as snacks.
As we strolled up and down the colorful and charming high street, it felt like we were walking in a fairytale world!
While exploring the few open shops, we found a rustic bistro called “Shampire” for lunch. It was a local gem that served fresh and locally sourced food, with a romantic atmosphere and excellent service. I’m actually glad we ended up there instead of the one I had planned. If you’re ever in Whitstable, this bistro is a must-try!
We went back on the beach front for a nice, and I must admit, freeeeezing winter walk, and I was almost giving up on finding my oysters, until we found a stand called “Whitstable Oysters” (easy peasy!!) selling oysters very close to the Whitstable Marine.
The prices were so affordable, 3 oysters per £5 or 6 per £10. I would have had 10000!!
I was in paradise and my friend was SO relieved! Hard work to be a good friend!!
We took the train back to London quite early because in January it gets dark soon and again, 90% of the places weren’t open.
Even if it wasn’t the right time to visit this seaside town, I adored its quaint and old- fashioned atmosphere and I will definitely go back in late spring and or summer time. I have so many good places I want to try!
